For a high end MKP capacitor, low loss is an important factor for stable electrical performance. Two commonly used parameters for evaluating capacitor loss are DF and ESR. But what do they mean, and why are they important when selecting a low loss MKP capacitor?
DF (Dissipation Factor) indicates the energy loss of a capacitor during operation. A lower DF generally means lower dielectric loss and better efficiency.
ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) represents the equivalent resistance inside a capacitor. Lower ESR means lower resistive loss, which can be especially important in high-frequency applications.
Although both DF and ESR are related to capacitor loss, they describe different aspects of the capacitor's electrical characteristics.
For a high end MKP capacitor, low DF and ESR can help reduce electrical losses and maintain stable performance.
MKP capacitors use polypropylene film as the dielectric, which is known for its low dielectric loss. Combined with appropriate film and metallization technology, this makes it possible to achieve the low-loss characteristics required in demanding applications.
For audio equipment, including speaker crossovers and amplifiers, these characteristics can be useful when stable and low-loss signal transmission is required.
